Shawl-Anderson Dance Center
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center offers a range of challenging and focused summer programs for the dancer who is disciplined, seeking creative expansion and is generous of spirit. Camps and intensives are available for ages 4 to 18, from beginning to the pre-professional teen. Students will both broaden and deepen their understanding of dance techniques, history, and choreography in our supportive and encouraging community.

Young dancers will spend the week exploring the classic stories Coppelia (Aug 5-9) and/or Sleeping Beauty (Aug 19-23). Students engage in ballet, modern, and craft time to bring the characters to life for a Story Ballet presentation. "Grown ups" are invited to attend an informal performance on the final day of camp.

Through art and dance classes, campers will explore the many connections of one theme chosen for the week. With movement classes ranging from flamenco to hip-hop to choreography, and art projects including sculpture and painting, students engage in a creative week of dance and visual art.

Students will sample and learn an array of street dance styles including popping, locking, breaking, hip-hop, house, and vogueing.This week also incorporates capoeira, martial arts, and video/history discussions. This is geared for beginners and those new to the style.

This dance sampler week introduces students to a wide variety of dance styles from modern, ballet, jazz, and hip-hop to West African dance, flamenco, capoeira, and more! This intensive also includes improvisation and choreography classes for students to explore their own ways of moving and creating.

Through daily technique, specialty classes in turns and jumps, video/history discussions, and variations class, dancers will explore classical ballet from the early origins to the current trends. Students will apply these techniques and performance skills through learning variations from Swan Lake, La Esmeralda, Don Quixote, and more.

This three day camp, which can also be taken as a daily drop-in, is perfect for all students looking to maintain their body’s power and learn strength and conditioning tools to prepare themselves for more success in their dancing. Each day will be different as participants practice techniques that will inform their dancing including yoga, pilates, weight training, cardio, stretching, and thera band work.
Ages 13-18 | All Levels (1yr Teen Modern Training Required)

Students will be immersed in a rigorous week of training designed to enhance and support their technical proficiency in dance. The schedule will include daily modern dance classes and workshops in either jazz, hip-hop or ballet techniques, as well as specialty topics including dance history, yoga, partnering, and improvisation.

Ballet today has taken an exciting twist by pulling from contemporary and somatic practices. Companies and choreographers such as Kyle Abraham, Crystal Pite, and William Forsythe have pushed the discipline forward. Join us for a week of exploration into current ballet trends via daily technique, supporting forms, video discussions, and contemporary ballet variation classes.

This two week intensive is for students who want to perform! Culminating in a formal evening show with full costumes and lighting design in SADC’s studio theater, dancers will learn repertoire by acclaimed local professional company ka·nei·see | collective (kaneisee.org). Company dancers and Artistic Director Tanya Chianese (named one of Dance Magazine’s 2019 “25 to Watch”) will collaborate with students to set choreography and rehearse dances for their final show, as well as teach daily modern dance technique and production classes. Specialty workshops include stage makeup, social media marketing, body care, a photo shoot, and more. Please note students will need to be available from 6-9pm on August 9th for their final performance.
