About the Best High Schools on the Peninsula and in Silicon Valley Awards

The Best of Parents Press Readers Choice Poll began as a way to give families in the Bay Area a platform to share their recommendations for the best schools, programs, and services for kids. Over the years, this initiative has grown into a trusted annual tradition that reflects the true voice of the community. Each year, parents, students, and educators come together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of schools across the Peninsula and Silicon Valley.

The voting process takes place in two key rounds:

  1. Round One (March – Early April): Families submit open write-in nominations for their favorite high schools across multiple categories—alternative learning style, faith-based, independent, and public high schools.
  2. Round Two (April – May): The top nominees from round one appear on the final ballot. Write-in nominations close, and voters choose their favorites from the list of finalists.

The final winners are announced in the August issue of Parents Press, making it easy for families to plan for the upcoming school year with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions – Best High Schools on the Peninsula and in Silicon Valley

How are the best high schools selected?

The winners are determined by community votes in our annual Readers Choice Poll. The process includes an open nomination round followed by a final voting round featuring the top nominees.

What types of high schools are included in the awards?

We feature four main categories: Alternative Learning Style High Schools, Faith-Based High Schools, Independent High Schools, and Public High Schools. Each category recognizes excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and student support.

Are the rankings based solely on academics?

No. While academic performance is important, our awards also consider factors like school culture, student engagement, teacher quality, extracurricular opportunities, and community feedback.

Can new schools be nominated?

Yes. During the nomination period, any qualifying high school serving the Peninsula and Silicon Valley region can be nominated, regardless of size or whether it has been recognized before.

When should families start the high school search process?

Ideally, families should begin researching high schools at least a year before enrollment. Many private and independent schools have application deadlines in the fall or winter prior to the school year.

Do public high schools require applications?

Most students attend the public high school in their designated district. However, some districts and charter schools offer transfer options or specialized programs that require separate applications.

Are scholarships or financial aid available at independent and faith-based schools?

Yes. Many private high schools, including independent and faith-based institutions, offer need-based financial aid, merit scholarships, or tuition assistance programs to make education accessible to more families.

How can I vote for my favorite high school?

Voting opens in the spring each year. Keep an eye on the Parents Press website and social media channels for announcements on nomination and voting dates.
