About the Best Middle Schools Awards
The Best of Parents Press Readers Choice Awards were created to give Bay Area families a voice in recognizing outstanding educational institutions. From small, specialized programs to large, established schools, the awards honor institutions that make a lasting impact on students’ academic success, personal growth, and community involvement.
The selection process takes place in two engaging rounds each spring:
- Round One (March – Early April): Families nominate their favorite middle schools in an open, write-in format. This ensures every school—big or small—has the opportunity to be recognized.
- Round Two (April – May): The top nominees from Round One appear on the official ballot. During this phase, the community votes for their favorites from a curated list of finalists. Write-ins are closed at this stage.
Once voting concludes, results are tallied and winners are announced in the August issue of Parents Press, just in time for families making school decisions for the upcoming academic year.
Frequently Asked Questions – Middle Schools on the Peninsula and in Silicon Valley
What types of middle schools are included in the awards?
The awards cover public schools, independent schools, faith-based schools, and alternative learning style middle schools. This ensures representation for all learning preferences, from traditional classrooms to specialized or personalized learning environments.
How are the winners chosen?
Winners are selected through a two-round community voting process. Round One gathers open nominations, and Round Two determines winners from the most-nominated finalists.
Why are alternative learning style schools recognized separately?
Alternative learning style middle schools cater to students who thrive outside traditional classroom structures. This may include project-based learning, individualized instruction, or specialized support for learning differences.

Yes! Every nomination period begins with an open call, allowing any qualifying middle school in the Peninsula and Silicon Valley to be nominated, regardless of prior recognition.
What factors should I consider when choosing the best middle school for my child?
Look at academic programs, extracurricular activities, class sizes, teaching philosophy, location, diversity, and parent reviews. Visiting campuses and speaking to administrators can also provide valuable insight.
