East Bay German International School
The East Bay German International School (EBGIS) combines bilingual German and English instruction with project-based learning and an international perspective. The EBGIS Elementary School (Grades 1-4) and Middle School (Grades 5-8) feature rigorous academics based on proven German curricula and literature-rich English Language Arts instruction. A key feature of the EBGIS program is the introduction of advanced science topics as early as the fifth grade. A third language, either Spanish or French, is introduced in the sixth grade.
At EBGIS, the highly trained international faculty guide students in developing their strengths across academic disciplines as well as critical thinking skills, social-emotional competencies, and artistic abilities. Averaging just twelve students per class, EBGIS is truly “small by design,” allowing teachers to engage and support each student based on their unique needs.
Students entering the EBGIS Elementary and Middle Schools typically speak some German but need not be fluent to join. Individualized language support is tailored to students’ needs.
Many students enter the EBGIS Elementary School from the on-site EBGIS Early Childhood Program. Students from the age of two may join the preschool or kindergarten with no prior knowledge of German. Early Childhood Program students, the majority of whom do not speak German at home, acquire German naturally through bilingual immersion and transition successfully to the EBGIS Elementary School.
Graduates of the EBGIS Middle School go on to succeed in the on-site East Bay International High School (EBIHS). EBIHS is an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the highly regarded IB Diploma Programme (DP) to all its students. IB graduates are sought after by top universities in the United States and around the world. In addition, EBGIS students who continue on to EBIHS receive outstanding marks on the Deutsches Sprachdiplom —Germany’s official language fluency exam — qualifying for direct admission to Germany’s excellent and tuition-free university system.
