Founded in 1984, Duck’s Nest Preschool is a beloved early childhood education program with three thoughtfully designed campuses in Berkeley and Oakland, California. With a philosophy centered on relationship-based, play-centered learning, Duck’s Nest supports the social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development of young children through curiosity-driven exploration and strong teacher-child connections.
A cornerstone of the Duck’s Nest approach is its commitment to anti-bias education. Staff and curriculum are guided by a deep respect for diversity, inclusion, and equity. The school affirms the identities of all children and families—across race, culture, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure, and ability. Through developmentally appropriate dialogue, diverse books, art, and play, children are encouraged to embrace differences, stand up for fairness, and cultivate empathy. Teachers receive ongoing training in anti-bias practices and cultural responsiveness, ensuring these values are not only taught but modeled daily.
Nature and environmental stewardship are also central to the Duck’s Nest experience. Each campus is designed to nurture a child’s innate connection to the natural world, featuring gardens, large outdoor play areas, and eco-conscious activities. Children engage in gardening, observe seasonal changes, care for plants and animals, and participate in outdoor art and movement. These experiences support sensory development, deepen ecological awareness, and instill a lifelong respect for the earth.
The school’s play-based curriculum supports exploration in language, math, science, art, and social collaboration, while offering structure through consistent routines and intentional teaching. Duck’s Nest views each child as a capable, curious learner and fosters their confidence through hands-on discovery, storytelling, and rich creative expression.
With a dedicated teaching staff, low student-teacher ratios, and a deeply engaged parent community, Duck’s Nest Preschool offers a warm, inclusive environment where children grow as kind, curious, and socially aware individuals.
